CALS signs MOU with Indonesia’s Food and Drug Authority

A delegation of officials from the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority of the Republic of Indonesia visited the UW­–Madison campus Sept. 23–24 to meet campus partners and sign a Memorandum of Understanding with university leaders. Ahead of the signing, FRI hosted a webinar series for agency staff on the development of food safety systems for dairy products. More trainings are planned in the future.

UW scientists team with meat industry to provide food safety solution

FRI executive committee member Jeff Sindelar and HansonTech’s Robert Hanson, along with FRI’s Kathy Glass, Andy Milkowski, and graduate students Russ McMinn and Jordan Nehls, published work validating a method to ensure the destruction of Salmonella on product surfaces during impingement cooking. This project was generously funded by ConAgra Foods, Hormel Foods, Johnsonville Sausage, Jones Dairy Farm, Sugar Creek Packing, and Tyson Foods.

UW alumna Dr. Penny Lukito, who leads Indonesia’s FDA, was connected to FRI through the Indonesia Alumni Chapter in Jakarta. The connection led to discussions on capacity building for Indonesia, with FRI experts providing virtual food safety training to the Indonesian FDA.

FRI welcomes new director

FRI welcomes its new director, Chuck Kaspar, who assumed the role on July 1, 2021. Dr. Kaspar has been part of FRI since he came to UW-Madison in 1992 as a new professor after holding positions at FDA and Cargill. His research has largely focused on the transmission and evolution of two zoonotic pathogens associated with foodborne disease outbreaks: Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) and Salmonella. EHEC is the subset of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) strains that are pathogenic to humans and includes E. coli O157:H7 and other (such as the “Big 6”) STEC strains.
