FRI Remembers Dorothy Gosting, Early Science Writer

It is with sadness that we report that one of FRI’s early science writers, Dorothy Gosting, has died. Dorothy was hired by Gail Dack and worked at FRI from 1966 until her retirement in 1992. Dorothy led the writing efforts for an annotated bibliography of the literature, “Food Safety,” which FRI continued to publish annually through 1996. During “pre-Google” days, this publication was a highly sought resource for industry and regulators, providing a compilation of research related to diet and health, food toxicology, and microbial foodborne illness.

UW Campus Response and Information for COVID-19

UW-Madison has suspended Spring Semester face-to-face instruction effective Monday, March 23, through the remainder of the spring semester. Campus events are canceled through May 15, and campus buildings are currently open to essential employees only.

Due to the restriction on campus events, FRI has postponed the remaining FRESH seminars for the semester. The Spring Meeting in May will be transitioned to a virtual format for registered attendees and sponsors. Paid registrants for the event will be refunded. Information on the virtual event will be sent out via email. Please contact Lindsey Jahn at lindsey.jahn@wisc.edu with any questions.

The majority of FRI staff are working from home, but we anticipate daily operations to go on as usual for the most part.

We will keep you up to date on any further changes as they happen. For more information on campus response to COVID-19, please visit the official website.

FRI Remembers Bob Deibel

The Food Research Institute is saddened to announce the recent passing of Dr. Robert H. Deibel, who had deep ties to the Institute as well as UW-Madison. Dr. Deibel began his career at the University of Wisconsin with FRI in 1966. He became a full Professor in 1970 and served as chair of the department of bacteriology for three years while mentoring numerous graduate students in their pursuit of advanced degrees. In 1979, Dr. Deibel founded Deibel Laboratories, a commercial laboratory for the microbiological testing of foods, water, and cosmetics.

Together with his wife Carol, Dr. Deibel generously donated to FRI to establish two endowed graduate fellowships, one in food safety and the other in probiotics. Thanks to the Deibels’ gift, FRI is able to continue training the next generation of food safety experts.

“Bob’s contributions in academia, and the broader world of food safety, were huge,” said FRI Director Chuck Czuprynski. “He will be missed.”

Condolences can be shared online at https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/sarasota-fl/robert-deibel-9012596.
